…and other reflections from the frontier

Skype FREETALK Wireless Stereo Headset is for today’s Skype users… not tomorrow’s… not yesterday’s.

Posted by mtc on 22 November, 2007

SkypeJournal’s recent series on Skype’s forward moving strategies included a discussion on the relevance of hardware. Well this Christmas, a piece of hardware near and dear to my heart will be ready to ship. I’ve written about the FREETALK in another post, so no need to repeat.

The nicest thing about this device… it is a very simple and elegant hardware solution that imporves the way *current* Skype users experience voice chat.

FREETALK is for the hear and now.  It does not distract you from the now.  It does not promise a future that is not ready.  It does not try to pretend you are in the past.

1. Other types of Skype hardware struggle with gear that is trying to bring skype to Skype-non-users. Make it look like a normal desk telephone, and give the simple number dialing usage model a home on the skype network. Harder sell. Gotta sell on lower cost. Gotta teach people new features. People who would get this are likely more attached to their PCs.

2. Or bring Skype to platforms where potential users are using a different telephony service. Run Skype on my mobile phone, now you’ve got to be better than the experience of making call on my mobile.

  2. Hi Peter

Yes, the headset will work with all PC programs and acts just like a normal wired microphone. You could also use it for simply listening to music or with other VOIP programs.

For more support you can contact support@instoresolutions.com who manufacture the product.

I bought the Free Talk product and it is great except for one very debilitating thing. The left earphone emits a very high pitched screech all the time. The headset can be used but the eardrums tend to really hurt after a few minutes.

What is going on here? It does this at every location so it is not a local interference problem.

  7. This is quite a hot info. I’ll share it on Delicious.

Great product! but one big problem. Ones you install it, you can’t go back to use the computer speakers unless you manually pull it from the USB (so primitive).
different words: There is no way to switch between the Freetalk and computer speakers.

I tried to contact the support but they don’t respond.

    Thanks for the advise howeaver.
This hadphones are taking over the whole computer not just Skype!!.
I’m using it for VOP, PCTV, Music, and all other program that have audio. It is working great, but sometime I want to use the computer speakers (when I watch TV or music) and I can’t. The only program that give me the option to switch between the headphones and speakers is my softphone program (it has a button called “speaker phone”.)It is creasy to change the setting of “Skype,”Media Players” etc. or to yank it out of the USB every day. Just make a button (ether hardware or softwear) that easily switch between headphone and speakers and then you will really have a great product.
And about the support, they open a ticket and never get back to you. (even here it took a month).

  12. I agree with the above, Wireless Speakers are very nice.,
